William Thomas v Edmund Plowdon Exor of Ignatius Wheeler

On the fifteenth day of April in the year of our Lord Eig seventeen hundred & ninety five; the petitioner by John Allen Thomas my attorney filed in Court have the following petition towit.

To the Honorable the Judges of Saint Marys County Court. The petition of William Thomas, humbly sheweth; that your petitioner is lineally descended in the female line from a free white woman, and is entitled to freedom but is unjustly held in slavery by a certain Ignatius Wheeler of Saint Marys County, he therefore prays your worships to grant him relief in the premises and du as in duty bound will pray &c

On the thirteenth day of March in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven, the Defendant by Walter Dorssey his attorney filed in Court here the following plea towit

And the said Edmund by Walter Dorssey his attorney comes and saith that the said William Thomas, is not lineally descended in the female line from a free white woman, and of this he puts himself upon the Country, and the said William doth the like andsoforth
