<p>The petition of Manuel Glasgow by William Herbert his next friend respectfully sheweth to you honors that he is now held in unlawful custody as a slave by Washington Simmons free negro of the said County of Washington and that in fact your petition is free and your petitioner prays you honors to take into consideration his case and hear and determine the same and your petitioner will ever pray &amp;c &amp;c</p>
